Protective & Marine Painter Course

Who should do this course?

Anyone who is aspiring to be a world-class professional sandblaster  and  industrial paint applicator ( or painting supervisor ) who will be responsible for painting  large surface areas and substrates that need protection from highly corrosive environments.

Job Description:

The individual at work assesses the environmental conditions which the substrate has to withstand, prepares its surface, and then applies protective coating as per company’s standards or customer’s requirements.

Duration : One month.

Eligibility : 8TH STANDARD PASSED

Course Modules:

1. Surface Preparation to paint the substrate

  • This unit is about iidentifying the causes and mechanisms of corrosion and common methods of corrosion control.
  • Inspecting, analysing and preparing the substrate to be painted.
  • Erecting of appropriate scaffolding and support structures for this purpose.
  • Surface preparation methods used to prepare steel and concrete for application of protective coatings, removing surface defects and contaminants and proper use of surface preparation standards visual aids
  • Describe the types and characteristics of abrasives and how they should be stored and handled.

2. Paint the substrate

  • This unit is about painting substrate as per standard procedure and inspecting painted surface.
  • Explain the reasons for using industrial protective coatings, and desirable material properties for these coatings, and coating components, their functions, and how they contribute to desired coating properties.
  • Cover application methods of protective coatings, proper handling of coatings prior to application, the methods and techniques used to apply coatings.
  • Identify possible coatings defects prior, during, and after application of the coating.
  • Using different inspection instruments for checking the painted surface as per company standards is also an important part of the module. 

3. Coordinate with colleagues and/or customers:

  • This unit is about communicating effectively with superiors, colleagues and/or customers to achieve a smooth workflow.
  • This section focuses on working with cooperation, coordination, communication and collaboration, with shared goals and supporting each other’s performance. Understand the customer expectations correctly and provide the appropriate products and services.

4. Maintain standards of product / service quality:

  • Define quality and quality system terms, identify organizations that issue quality standards, describe why documents and data must be controlled during an industrial painting job.
  • Review the importance of equipment verification and calibration, describe what the inspector does, discuss the causes of common coating failures and recognize how coating failures are investigated.
  • This unit is about understanding accepted levels of standards of product quality or customer service and executing the designated work in a manner that results in 100% satisfaction.
  • The applicator should know different company policies and quality standards. 

5. Maintain OH&S standards and follow environmental norms:

  • This unit is about complying with workplace health, hygiene, safety and environmental standards to have a hazard-free environment and avoid downtime. It is also about following government laid norms for waste treatment and disposal. Usage of safety tools or Personal Protective Equipment is an important factor.
  • Identify hazards that are commonly encountered by coating applicators and the equipment, methods, and procedures available to reduce these hazards to an acceptable level. 

6. Maintain IPR of organisation and customers:

  • This unit is about securing intellectual property rights (IPR) of the employee’s organisation and respecting customer’s copyright.Understanding of confidential company policies, patents, trademarks, copyrights and other trade secrets of company as well as customer’s secrecy.

Other  salient features of this unique program will be :

  • The training is designed and executed in such a way that a certified student will be productive from day one on any given project so that no further training will be necessary to engage him on a work site and get efficient and economic work output.
  • This course is approved by NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) which is an entity constituted by Ministry of HRD, Union Government, under its “Skill India” initiative.
  • Very comprehensive and practical oriented syllabus based on “National Occupational Standards” that are defined by the Indian  Government at par with the highest of International Standards in respective skills.
  • It is conducted under direct supervision of “Painting and Coatings Skill Council” (PCSC) which  is an NSDC authorized body constituted for the sole purpose of imparting skills in painting and coating sector. 
  • The training and examinations are conducted by PCSC approved personnel under strict training and invigilation guidelines and certificates are issued by NSDC only to those who pass these examinations successfully.
  • An extensive range of blasting and painting machinery, instruments, gauges and test specimen are employed in the training process.
  • With the help of a well-illustrated text book published by PCSC, the classes will be delivered by PCSC trained lecturers in comfortable Air Conditioned Classrooms based on power point slides, audio- visual presentation as well as  hands on laboratory sessions and workshop exercises at Blasting / Painting yards.
  • The batch size is limited to 25 students to enhance individual attention to each of the students.
